Relax in the spa
Dubai has established itself as a luxury destination, appealing to wealthy visitors with plenty of money to spend. Many luxury hotels feature opulent guest suites and very expensive restaurants, as well as beautiful spas. After a day of sunbathing, sightseeing and shopping, take a relaxing break in one of the enormous spa complexes.
A 7-star spa
The landmark Burj Al Arab is the only (self-proclaimed) 7-star hotel in the world and of course offers a 7-star spa. The Assawan Spa on the 18th floor offers a panoramic view of the city and the Palm islands. But most guests come here to relax and enjoy one of the dozens of treatments on offer, ranging from Ayurvedic candle wax treatments to herbal compresses. The signature spa treatment is an hour-and-a-half massage that uses a mixture of Japanese, Thai, Swedish and Balinese techniques.
5-star bath ritual
The showpiece of the vast One&Only Spa is the oriental hammam that offers a bath ritual inspired by ancient Constantinople transported to a 5-star luxury setting. The entire ritual takes 2 hours: first you are washed and scrubbed, then wrapped in detoxifying clay. Next you are given a facial treatment with honey and finally a relaxing body massage.
Wellness temple
The Desert Palm designer hotel is located in the desert on the outskirts of Dubai. The hotel’s wellness temple offers a large menu of spa treatments. Choose a facial with protein-rich caviar, a cleansing sea salt scrub or a soothing shiatsu massage. Compile your own spa package by choosing several treatments that are combined into a seamless 2-and-a-half hour or half-day spa session.

For the residents of the United Arab Emirates, Friday is like Sunday in the west – a quiet, lazy day of rest. On the first day of the weekend, restaurants try to outdo each other with delectable gourmet brunch buffets. Oysters served on shaved ice, crab, lobster and crispy Peking duck are among just some of the delicacies offered. Decadence is a virtue, as it is after all the most festive meal of the week.

In the mini state of Dubai, home to 600 hotels of which 65 are 5 stars or higher, it will take a lot more to impress guests than a simple bottle of wine or free Wi-Fi in their room. How about a hot tub with a view of 65,000 bright fish in a subtropical lagoon? Or perhaps a dining table at a ski slope while the outside temperature rises above 40 degrees?
