Vintage in Latinerkvarteret

The charming neighbourhood of Latinerkvarteret owes its name to the university which has been located here for centuries. And while the name may make you think of the Latin Quarter in Paris, this hidden area of central Copenhagen has a character all of its own. In addition to the university buildings, the Latinerkvarteret boasts hip record shops, quirky comic book stores and many second-hand boutiques.

Looking for vintage gems

It’s best to begin an afternoon of shopping at Time's Up in the Krystalgade. Behind this vintage store is a team of critical fashionistas who only pick the finest items. Designer showpieces hang here on racks next to more unknown finds. Along the walls is the largest vintage shoe collection in all of Copenhagen. Gold stilettos by Prada, a classic trench coat or a cocktail dress from the 1950s – this shop can safely be called a vintage mecca. Unique headgear can be found a few streets away at FN92 Vintage in Larsbjørnsstræde. Owner Pauli Tvilling has put together a wonderful collection of dresses and accessories including bags. The hats are especially impressive, with the oldest being an exuberant black bead headdress dating back to 1890. Another exceptional item is the lace embroidered bridal veils from 1920, complete with tiaras. The hats can be tried on, so take the opportunity to put on a fancy feather thing from the 1930s or go for the wide brim look of the 1970s. In the same street you will find Carmen and Fantasio, one of the oldest and best vintage shops in the city. Although the shop is located in a small cellar, it offers a wide range of products. There are bargains here from the 1970s and 1980s for both men and women, including flashy sunglasses, leather jackets, bright red pumps and a profusion of floral shirts. The collection is full of funny and wonderful finds that will restore flair to any wardrobe.

Just relax

Shopping can make you hungry. Fortunately, there are many convivial restaurants and cosy cafés in the Latinerkvarteret. In Det Lille Apotek, the oldest restaurant in Copenhagen, you can have a delightful lunch with traditional Danish dishes. Hans Christian Andersen was a fan and came here often. Try the pork steak with Brussels sprouts, red cabbage and rye bread. For a drink, visit the modern café Dalle Valle on the Frue Plads. In addition to great coffee, this place serves exceptional fresh juices, for example strawberry with mint and lime.
